The history of Auburndale begins in 1880, when Frank Fuller founded the city. He had grown weary of the harsh winters of the Northeast U.S. and fled the area in search of somewhere warmer and gentler where he could rest and recuperate. He settled on the banks of Lake Mariana, where he founded Auburndale, known initially as “Sanatoria.”
Surrounded by beauty and warm weather, Fuller’s health improved, and his small colony began to expand. The railroad arrived a few years later, and the city’s name was changed to Auburndale at the request of settlers from Auburndale, Massachusetts. The area became known for its artistic culture. Fuller's daughter, Loie, led the way, becoming famous as the originator of serpentine dancing.
Today, Auburndale is known as a pleasant and friendly place to live and work. It’s the proud home of some beautiful buildings, like the historic Auburndale City Hall, built in 1927 and designed in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, and the extensive Auburndale Public Library, which hosts various events for locals and visitors throughout the year.
